Description

Planning language teaching in the context of Portuguese complementary education requires tailoring instruction to meet variance among learners in the classroom. Class-groups can include children in a diverse range of levels and ages, coming from different mainstream classes and year groups attending the same school as well as a variety of children from different schools in the area. The profusion of language learning goals and language learning needs is a structural feature of the after-school model of provision with which the Portuguese teachers must grapple on a daily basis.

The teaching techniques and methodologies used for the Portuguese classes necessarily involve pedagogical differentiation. Teachers may need to differentiate content, process, products, assessment or the learning environment and groupings to create the best learning experience and the highest possible outcomes.

This two-day workshop features moments of conceptual and methodological development, reflection and discussion, planning and presentation of language learning and teaching proposals for this idiosyncratic context. The overarching aim is to consolidate and share strategies for the development of language skills through the communicative approach, emphasising interaction in effective and authentic contexts of communication and learning.
