A.S. Byatt at the IMLR

Dame Antonia Byatt was the Institute's guest at this year's Bithell Memorial 'Lecture'. In conversation with Professor Emeritus Martin Swales (UCL) and Dr Godela Weiss-Sussex (IMLR), she spoke about the importance of German literature and culture in her work and mesmerized a capacity audience in the Court Room at Senate House.

New MRes Programme now running at the Institute

This new course, run by the Institute and leading to the University of London degree of Master of Research in Modern Languages, may be taken on a full-time basis over one year, or part-time over two. The languages currently covered are French/Francophone, German, Italian, and Spanish/Latin American.

Language Show Live (16-18 October 2015)

This year’s Language Show Live will run from Friday, 16 to Sunday, 18 October 2015 at Olympia, Kensington. The show is the biggest trade fair in the UK and Europe’s leading annual event for the language sector, and is supported by amongst other organisations, the British Council, the Chartered Institute of Linguists, the Institute of Translation and Interpreting, the Goethe Institute, London, and the European Commission.

Research Centre for Exile Studies Celebrates 20th Anniversary

2015 marks the first 20 years of the Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies and the 25th anniversary of its forerunner, the London Research Group for German Exile Studies which, in 1995, joined forces with the Centre established in Aberdeen by Professor Hamish Ritchie.

DAAD and IMLR Translation Competition Opens

The competition to translate a short passage from Annett Gröschner’s recent novel Walpurgisnacht (Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt, 2011) has just opened. Complementing the series organised by the IMLR in partnership with the University of Nottingham, Annett Gröschner and her translator, Katy Derbyshire, will feature at the next Encounters: Writers and Translators in Conversation at the IMLR on 10 December, which will be followed by the prize-giving.

What is Modern Languages Research? Podcasts Now Online

Podcasts from the pilot workshop held on 15 July are now available. Organised in conjunction with the AHRC-sponsored project ‘Translating Cultures’, the event aimed to establish what constitutes Modern Languages as a disciplinary field and to identify the defining features of Modern Languages research as practised in the UK.
