Postgraduate
The Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies was established in August 2004 with the merger of the Institute of Germanic Studies and the Institute of Romance Studies, founded in 1950 and 1989 respectively. The purpose of the new Institute is to promote and facilitate the study of the cultures of German-speaking and Romance language countries across a range of disciplines in the humanities, additionally, it produces a journal, the Journal of Romance Studies (3 issues per year). As a graduate student of the Institute, you will have free access to the conference programme, which brings major scholars from all over the UK and overseas.
You will also have access to the various seminar groups run at the Institute, bringing together graduate students and scholars from the various Colleges of the University of London and from other London and UK universities. At present, seminars exist in the following areas:
- Contemporary Women’s Writing in French
- Exiled Writers' Seminar
- Cultural Memory (This brings together graduate students and major researchers working in the field. Students of the MA in Cultural Memory will be encouraged to participate in this seminar)
- Imagined City
- IGRS Work in Progress
- London French Studies Research Seminar
- Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies Research Seminar
- Photography: Theory, Practice and Debate
- Ingeborg Bachmann Centre for Austrian Literature Seminars and Workshops

Additionally you benefit from the presence at the Institute of Visiting Fellows from overseas, who are invited to participate in the Institute’s work, including the MA in Cultural Memory and the MRes in Modern Languages during their stay.
You will also be encouraged to attend the regular seminars of the Graduate Forum organized at the Institute by graduate students from the various University of London Colleges working in the field of Germanic and Romance languages and the National Postgraduate Colloquium in German Studies.
The Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies is a member institute of the School of Advanced Study of the University of London. This gives you access to the conference and seminar programmes of the other member institutes, covering a wide range of disciplines. The other member institutes are:
You will be able to meet graduate students from these other Institutes through the School of Advanced Study's own Research Training programme and through joint events. The Institutes' individual Research Training programmes offer those wishing to explore interdisciplinary perspectives an introduction to methodologies in other areas of the humanities and social sciences.
