When You Arrive

Most Institute events take place in Stewart House, though some will be held in Senate House North Block.

Stewart House is the wing between Senate House and Russell Square; its entrance is at 32 Russell Square. This is immediately on your left as you enter the Senate House car park from Russell Square, or just before the gate on your right as you come through the cloister from Malet Street.

Most events/meetings will take place on the second floor, which is accessible by lift or stairs. Enter through the door marked 'School of Advanced Study: Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies'. Turn left to find most of the seminar rooms (ST 273, 274/5 and 276). Some meetings will take place in the basement, also accessible by lift and stairs. Turn left as you come out of the lift, and left again, to find meeting rooms (STB 3, 6 and 9).

Senate House North Block is on your right as you approach from Russell Square (that is, go through the car park and turn right when you reach the Senate House cloister) or on your left as you approach from Malet Street. The main meeting room in the North Block is room 336, on the third floor. Walk through the corridor to the lobby where the North Block Café, lifts and stairsare located. Smaller meeting rooms (NG 14, 15 and 16) are on the ground floor; these are along the corridor left of the North Block Café.

The Germanic Studies Library has now moved into the Senate House. Open-access sections are temporarily housed on the second floor of the North Block; volumes on closed access can be ordered there but will be supplied for reading in the main library on the fourth floor of the Senate House South Block. The Germanic Studies Librarian, Dr Martin Liebscher, is located in Room 306 on the third floor of the Senate House North Block (Monday and Thursday mornings; Friday afternoons).
