Centres and Societies
The Exile Archive was established in 1996-97 at the then Institute of Germanic Studies, which already possessed the papers of Rudolf Majut, Herbert Thoma and Berthold Auerbach, who were exiles from Germany and Austria during the 1930s as a result of persecution under the National Socialist regime. Since the archive was set up, the Institute has attracted donations from other émigrés, and the collection now comprises material relalting to organisations and individuals.
It is intended to expand this collection, to provide an historical perspective of German migration to the UK generally, and London in particular. The historical perspective will focus on the emigrant communities which settled in the UK from the eighteenth century onwards.
Anyone who owns material which they believe would be of wider interest and would like preserved in this way is invited to contact Dr Martin Liebscher, Librarian, at the Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies, University of London, Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU (tel: 020 7862 8969).
