AHRC Success – Skills Development Package

The Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies has been successful in obtaining a £38k award from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, in the framework of their Skills Development Call. The IGRS will be working closely with colleagues at King’s College and the University of London Institute in Paris on offering a programme on Modern Languages and Film, targeting postgraduate research students working on Film Studies in Schools of Modern Languages in the UK. A spring School and day conference in 2013 in Senate House will be complemented by grants and bursaries enabling staff and students to attend events we shall co-organise at film archives and libraries in Paris, Frankfurt, Madrid or Rome, as well as the 2013 MAGIS International Film Studies Spring School in Gorizia, Italy.

About the Institute

The IGRS was established in 2004 with the merger of the two Institutes of Germanic Studies and Romance Studies, founded in 1950 and 1989 respectively. It is one of the ten Institutes of the University of London's School of Advanced Study. Its purpose is to promote and facilitate the study of the cultures of German-speaking and Romance language countries across a range of disciplines in the humanities.

The Institute fosters and contributes to national and international collaborative, cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural research by means of seminars, lectures, workshops, colloquia, conferences, and a fellowship programme. Click here to download our Academic Programme.

The Germanic Studies Library, formerly the Library of the Institute of Germanic Studies, now part of the University of London Research Library Services (ULRLS) is devoted principally to German  language and  literature from their respective beginnings to the present day, and has substantial collections of books, journals, microfiches, theses and archives covering these fields. The Germanic Studies Library is now located on the fourth floor Senate House.

The IGRS offices are located on the second floor of Stewart House, at 32 Russell Square, between Senate House and the British Museum, where most of our activities are held. However, we also hold events in the newly-refurbished Senate House where you can also access the University Library.
